José Saramago est un écrivain et journaliste portugais né le 16 novembre 1922 dans la région d'Arinaga (centre du Portugal) dans une famille de paysans pauvres. * Il a commencé sa vie comme serrurier, puis comme journaliste et traducteur, avant de se consacrer entièrement à la littérature. Il publie son premier roman, The Land of Sin, en 1947, et arrête d'écrire pendant près de vingt ans.En 1966, il publie son premier recueil de poésie, Possible Poems. Il a publié une vingtaine d'ouvrages et est considéré par la critique comme l'un des écrivains les plus importants du Portugal grâce à ses romans polyphoniques, qui retracent l'histoire portugaise avec une subtile ironie proche du style adopté par Voltaire. - Membre du Parti Communiste Portugais depuis 1959. - A reçu le Prix International PEN Club en 1982 et le Prix Portugais Camويسes en 1995 - En octobre 1998, il a reçu le Prix Nobel de Littérature, pour son roman L'Année de la Mort de Ricardo Reis - Il était sceptique quant au récit officiel des événements 11 septembre 2001 - Saramago est décédé le 18 mai 2010
