José Saramago is a Portuguese writer and journalist born on November 16, 1922 in the Arinaga region (central Portugal) to a family of poor farmers. * He began his life as a locksmith, then as a journalist and translator, before devoting his time entirely to literature. He published his first novel, The Land of Sin, in 1947, and stopped writing for nearly twenty years. In 1966, he published his first poetry collection, Possible Poems. O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo (1991) è sicuramente uno dei libri piú belli - e sofferti - di Saramago. Come pure è quello che piú di tutti ha scatenato critiche feroci da parte del clero ortodosso sia portoghese sia italiano che ha definito blasfemo e sacrilego il romanzo.
Un Vangelo, invece, terribilmente umano, e che permette al lettore di sentirsi "spiritualmente" vicino alla figura del Cristo, di un Gesú riportato a dimensione umana, "pover'uomo" come tanti altri "poveri uomini" di questo mondo, peccatori e non. Prima, neonato come tutti gli altri, poi in perenne lotta tra questo mondo, quello degli uomini e delle donne, dell'amore e del dolore terreni, e il mondo soprannaturale - quello del Padre -, che non riesce a capire, i cui fini, e confini, sono a lui, come a tutti gli uomini, ignoti e imperscrutabili.
